Big News in Tech: Google Chromecast

Google has always been on the forefront of new technology and new movements on the web. They were instrumental in bringing the philosophy of the Web 2.0 movement to the world. Google still provides support to those beliefs with all of their offerings. They’ve helped create the web as we know it.

Now it looks like they are going to create the new wave of how we entertain ourselves. On Thursday, July 25, Google announced a new product called the Chromecast. For $35 Google is selling a device that will change how we interact with online content forever.

So what is Google Chromecast? Chromecast is a small USB device that does some amazing things. For $35 someone who buys a Chromecast will essentially be able to link all of their devices as one source of media, capable of casting the image to a television or other device through wifi. You can transfer what your tablet or smartphone is doing to your TV. You can even cast from Apple or other manufacturers’ devices. All of it works through the Chrome browser and a local wifi connection and it’s incredibly easy to set up.

It’s a brilliant way to link up all of your devices. All it takes is a touch of a button. Chromecast is going to make it easier for people to consume the media and content from the web any way they want to and it’s not expensive at all.

As people increasingly adopt multiple devices for accessing the internet, it has been a problem not being able to easily transfer whatever content you were consuming to a better medium. More and more web denizens access media from their phones, tablets, desktops, and laptops. Until that technology becomes inherent in all of our devices, Chromecast will be able to pick up the slack.

The other big tech companies like Apple will have to respond in some way to a device as versatile as Chromecast. It will be interesting to see how they do in the future.
